Interviewing for a new job can be a challenging experience. However, with thorough preparation and practice, your presentation can be an impressive performance.
One of the most important services offered by MRI Worldwide is working closely with candidates in developing effective interviewing techniques.
Preparation Is Critical…
The foundation for a successful interview is preparation – performing the necessary research to learn as much as possible to be sure the prospective job is a good fit for you and, equally important, to impress the people with whom you’ll interview.
- To begin, gather current information about the company and management including:
- Financial and other pertinent publications for up-to-date-information
- Web page information on company and key competitors
- Sales literature
Your search consultant will provide you with detailed information on the position, background of the hiring authority, some additional information on the company, and the interview timetable.
Practice DOES Make Perfect…
One of the most overlooked elements of interviewing is practice. To look your best in front of interviewers, here are some pointers:
- Honestly assess you employment background and develop explanations for any weak points.
- Be prepared to tell an interesting chronological short story on your background.
- Prepare concise well thought out answers to a list of tough questions that may be asked, such as:
- Reasons for wanting to leave current position?
- What you like most and least about your job?
- If sales position, describe in detail your sales process?
- List of achievements and accomplishments that clearly separate you from an average employee. If sales position, include detail on quota and quota achievements.
- Why should we hire you?
Practice these responses alone and with your search consultant
- Also prepare a list of good questions to ask the interviewer, such as:
- What are the specific job duties and responsibilities?
- What criteria will be used to make the hiring decision?
- How did the interviewer get started in the company?
- Where are the other employees who started in this position?
- Where can this position lead for a top performer?
Avoid asking questions relating to training, salary, fringes, vacation, and retirement until the second or final interview.
Deliver A Memorable Presentation…
Having prepared and practiced, you’re ready to present yourself to the interviewers.
- Your behavior should be friendly, yet businesslike
- Wear conservative, professional dress
- Listen closely to the questions and be sure your responses are concise and relevant
- Use specific examples to answer questions and make your point
- As the interview moves to a close, express your appreciation and interest in the career opportunity
Summary…
While the interview may be over, there’s more you should do:
- First call your MRI Worldwide search consultant within 30 minutes after the interview to review your interview and what steps should be taken next. Without this vital information we have no leverage in dealing with the client to get you to the next step of the hiring process.
- Decisiveness is key. Now that you have gathered all the information on the company and career opportunity, you need to make the decision to accept or reject the position prior to an offer being extended.
- Then write a customized thank-you letter to each of the interviewers. Mention topics discussed that were of great interest to you and your sincere desire to be a part of this team.
